Ben, a human, and Sorrel, a forest brownie, are on a quest with Firedrake, a dragon, to find the Rim of Heaven, a valley where dragons can live in peace. On the way, they encounter many fabulous creatures, including elves, fairies, a basilisk, a sea serpent -and a terrible monster named Nettlebrand, the Golden One, made to destroy all dragons.
