Dune by Frank Herbert

Dune is the story of a strange world in the distant future, and of Paul Atreides, a boy who fulfills an ancient prophecy. The Bene Gesserit, women trained in special arts and mind tricks, have long foretold of the Kwisatz Haderach, a man who can look inside himself into a place no woman can. Jessica Atreides has her son tested by the gom jabbar, a test of pain, and he becomes the first male ever to pass, signaling that he may be the Kwisatz Haderach. However, shortly after the test the emperor relocates him and his family's entire dukedom to Arrakis, a desert planet known as Dune - currently ruled by their long-time rival house of Harkonnen.

Dune is an excellent novel. Herbert creates a vibrant back drop in Arrakis for a great adventure story.
